Why Natural Hair is Not Bad But Beautiful and Loving it Changed My Life

The first time I went for work with my natural hair, I got mixed reactions. They all had me feeling one thing—a little hurt. Comments like “you look different.” “Is that you Frances?! I didn’t recognize you.” All said with the disapproving look in people’s eyes, told me that people did not associate my natural hair with remarkable beauty.

I was the new girl at the office, and I had a weave for a few weeks after I reported. Eventually, it got itchy and I had to get rid of it because I believed under all that weave, I had beautiful hair that deserved to be seen. So I put my hair in a bun and marched proudly to work everyday. Despite the disapproving looks and comments.

Learning To Love My Hair

People eventually got used to seeing me in my natural hair. I don’t have the longest and fullest hair. In fact I have a hairline that needs deliverance because of too much weave. But I refuse to be discouraged by these things and forever hide under extensions.  Even as I have hair that grows out of my scalp and is in need of love. I will love my hair and show it off as much and as often as I can. It will be a constant reminder that the world will only accept me as much as I accept myself. And it’s time I accept myself, all of myself.

So yes, people will judge you by your hair. They will call you beautiful and be lost for words only when they see you in long hair extensions. And they will likely wonder when they see you with your natural hair, why? Are you are doing it for religious reasons or trying to make a political statement? Your choice to show the real you will leave them confounded.

Just remember, the love you have for yourself will surpass all assumptions and negativity. Loving yourself means accepting even the things that other people might not. Accepting and loving who you are from the crown of your head and all the glorious curly hair that grows out of it. Down to the weather worn soles of your feet.
