It has been over 6 months since I made my New Year’s Resolutions and began to seriously consider self-love. I planned on doing a whole blog series on it, and somehow I’ve managed to procrastinate almost entirely.
It’s not that I haven’t been practicing some of the self-care techniques I intended. I have actually been doing just that!
And it feels great.
But I just haven’t been able to write about it. Probably because I was so enjoying the face masks, salt baths and foot scrubs. I think it’s about time though that I share just how necessary a DIY home spa day is for each and every one of us.
Putting yourself first, especially for most women, is not something that always comes so easily. We are almost always found caring for others and setting our own needs on the sideline. And we know just how draining that can be, even if we do love those we are helping. But an empty cup can’t pour water into another.
Pampering ourselves is the perfect way to remind us that we are worth the extra indulgence.
Yes, your schedule is busy. I’m sure it is packed full, but it’s time to clear out an evening or afternoon and just relax.
DIY SPA YOUR WAy
The perfect DIY spa is going to look a little different for each person, but believe me, it is absolutely possible for every one. I am fortunate to have a bath in my house. So, at least once a week I light candles, burn incense, pour myself a glass of wine and step into the tub to unwind. But I didn’t always have that luxury, just as some of you might not.
Have no fear. DIY spa day is still a reality for you nonbath households. One of my favorite things to do when I lived in low-resource setting in Madagascar was just boil some hot water and soak my feet in salt water. You would be surprised how gratifying just giving your feet the spa treatment can be. I always followed up with a nice foot massage and painting my nails.
Feet aren’t your thing? What about a DIY facial while sipping on lemon-cucumber water? Who could refuse? One of my favorite DIY masks can be found here. Can you guess which one is my favorite? I’ll give you a hint, I’m from California. AVOCADOS!!!
But really whichever you choose, just don’t forget the lemon-cucumber water. It’s the small details that are capable of transporting us away. And with the left over cucumbers, you can use for a little natural eye treatment. I’m telling you, it’s in the details!
A moment’s Get Away
One last little trick I like to do is have Moment Get Aways.
What’s that you ask? I’d be happy to share. I love to do a little prep work before and then enjoy Moment Get Aways throughout the week. They serve as little reminders of the upcoming spa day.
One such trick is freezing small green tea ice cubes. These are refreshing little facials that take less than 3 minutes. After this Moment Get Away, I feel invigorated, energized and fresh.
Another trick is sipping on that spa water all throughout the day. But it’s important to be mindful while you do it. If you are at work, don’t just rehydrate by chugging water without a second thought. Instead, make it a Moment Get Away, and really taste the lemon and cucumber. Maybe even close your eyes and escape if only for a brief moment. When you open your eyes you’ll feel more calm, restored and satisfied.
The last little trick I do to bring that DIY spa day into my every day routine is keep a pumice stone in the shower.
A DIY spa day is worth it, because you are worth it. So, tell me, is it time to light the candles, burn the incense and take a soak? When will your DIY home spa day make an appearance on that busy schedule of yours?
