Livingstone is a treasure of Zambia and for more reasons than it’s beautiful waterfall. Although, the waterfall, Mosi-oa-Tunya (also known as Victoria Falls), is indeed absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
But there is more to see in this quaint little town. Here are my top 5 things you must do when you visit Livingstone, Zambia
- Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls (Victoria Falls)
- Livingstone National Park Game Drive
- Sunset Booze Cruise Down the Zambezi River
- Drinks and Live Music at the Zambezi Cafe
- Pizza and Wine at Olga’s Pizzeria
Mosi-oa-Tunya Waterfalls
I have never seen more water in one place. I went to the Falls at the end of April, right after Rainy Season, and wow did the rains fall!
This is a World Heritage Site, and one look at it and you’ll know why. It is absolutely stunning. Zambia is home to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. The whole time I was walking around, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. It is just so remarkable. The water surrounding you as if you were in the middle of a cloud. And the noise. It has been given the nickname, the smoke that thunders and truly it is.
This is a sire that you won’t easily forget, and a visit here certainly makes the top of the list for things you must do while in Livingstone.
Livingstone National Park Game Drive
The second activity that makes the list is a game drive through the Livingstone National Park. This park allows for private vehicles to drive in for a small fare, and I was fortunate enough to enter with my friend and his car. But game drives can also be set up through various tour companies as well.
There are numerous animals to see. In just one afternoon we saw zebra, giraffe, warthog, antelope (puku), water buffalo and more. Despite not seeing them, there are also elephants that freely cross back and forth along the Zambia/Zimbabwe border. It was absolutely thrilling to see these animals in their natural habitat and protected.
While in the park, you can also have a nice little picnic along the Zambezi River. Just be sure whatever you take in you are sure to take out. We decided the best way to enjoy the river was on the top of our 4X4 where we could feel the breeze and the view.
Sunset Booze Cruise on the Zambezi River
There is nothing better than a booze cruise at sunset. And I have been on my share of these beloved boat rides, but the one in Livingstone definitely tops the list. Not only is the Zambezi River just beautiful to cruise down, but there are also hippo and elephant sightings that will make you want to raise your glass in celebration!
There are many cruise ships that are offered, but we stuck with Water Front. This boat has friendly staff, a smooth ride and a beautiful restaurant to eat at afterwards with vegan options.
Drinks and Live Music at Zambezi Café
Live music always puts a smile on my face, and a perfectly mixed drink makes it that much bigger. On weekends the Zambezi Cafe offers a great ambiance with local artists playing and a full restaurant.
There is a great drink menu, and the Pina Colada is made with full-fat coconut cream, AKA vegan! This is a fun spot to end the day after the game drive or to start the weekend off right.
Pizza and Wine at Olga’s The Italian Corner
One thing I miss living in Zambia is good pizza, but Livingstone has the remedy for that desperate craving. Olga’s Pizzeria is a fantastic surprise that will leave you satisfied and happy.
This restaurant offers numerous Italian favorites, but the meal that steals the show are the wood-fire baked pizzas. Which can easily be made vegan by just asking for no cheese. There are numerous veggie-friendly pizza options that use local ingredients and are always homemade. And don’t forget a smooth glass of wine to round out a most splendid meal.
After a delicious meal, don’t forget to check out the local arts and crafts that are part of and educational project for vulnerable youth of Livingstone. Like I said, this restaurant will leave you satisfied and happy!
